• My best friend is obsessed with Patrick and I got this for her! She loves it and it is very soft to touch and fluffy stuffed. He is shipped in a small box and all the air is squeezed out of him so maybe open him up and let him fluff up a bit before giving it as a present. He is a good and large size, but note that he is not round and spherical as the picture suggests. This is not a bad thing, just wanted to let others know! In the picture he looked spherical to me. He is still round and fluffy but not quite spherical. My friend loves it and It is a very good looking doll!

During holiday seasons when I taught preschool, I always tried to find the best books possible that explained the origins of the holiday, why it is celebrated, and how people celebrate the holiday today. For St. Patrick's Day, Gail Gibbons ST. PATRICK'S DAY is the best book I have ever come across that gives a thorough explanation of the holiday for young children. The first part of the book explains who St. Patrick was and why St. Patrick's Day is celebrated. The last part of the book describes ways the people (especially in the United States) celebrate the holiday and the meaning of some of the symbols. There is also a kind of epilogue to the main story that briefly describes some of the legends about St. Patrick. Each page of the book only has a few, simple, straight-forward, and easy to read sentences accompanied with large and playful illustrations. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to explain to young children about St. Patrick's Day.

 I thought this would be a great gag gift for Christmas and it ended up being a huge hit. A roll was immediately placed in the guest bathroom before everyone came over for dinner. Our first guest to use the restroom came out laughing and then informed everyone who ever bought the toilet paper was ripped off. I went in to see what he was talking about. The only sheets with Obama's face on it were the ones visible from the outer layer. After those few sheets it's just cheap, inexpensive, plain toilet paper. We looked at the other two and sure enough - Obama's face is on about 5 sheets wrapped around a terrible roll of cheap toilet paper! It was a gag gift, so it didn't really matter but I was angry I spent $20 on something I could have easily made at home for a lot less.

I have always enjoyed the picture books of Tomie dePaola. His unique illustration style is immediately recognizable and is reminiscent of religious icons found in Catholic and Orthodox churches.

Not surprisingly, dePaola often tackles Christian themes, making them accessible for younger readers and their parents. Among my all-time favorite children's book is his "The Clown of God," which I have enjoyed reading to children prior to Christmas.

"Patrick: Patron Saint of Ireland" is another such book. The simple narrative mainly addresses Patrick's early years as a British boy, captured by the Irish to become a slave shepherd in Ireland. After many years alone in prayer, he escapes, but eventually is called in a dream to return to Ireland to spread the love of God. After religious studies, becoming a missionary and then a bishop, he finally returns to Ireland, setting up churches, but not without opposition from some of the local rulers.

What I appreciate about this version of St. Patrick's story is the dependency on historical fact in the main narrative. The book concludes with six one-page summaries of the better-known legends of Ireland's patron saint, such as driving out the snakes, and his use of the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity. Refreshingly, these legends are briefly, but affectionately, told without judgment. It is left to the reader (or the parent) to decide what to make of them.

The author concludes with a one-page epilogue, lovingly explaining how he was introduced as a young child to St. Patrick by his Irish Catholic grandparents.

Having read other, classic studies on Patrick, I wasn't expecting much from this book. But I must admit that I was pleasantly surprised. Philip Freeman's "St. Patrick of Ireland" is a well-researched, scholarly, yet very readable book. While there is little new information in the book, for readers who wish to know something about St. Patrick but don't care to go in-depth, this work should serve adequately. The book should also serve as a good introduction to readers who wish to proceed to more in-depth scholarly works such as the late R. P. C. Hanson's, J. B. Bury's or other more studies.


Instead of concentrating on the vexing questions of dates, chronology, Patrick's missing years, and other intriguing though problematical issues in Patrician studies, Freeman concentrates on what is definitely known of Patrick's life and career, giving little space to speculation. He does a particularly good job of setting Patrick in the context of his times, describing fourth-century Romano-British and Irish society and religion.
